I began painting in 1969. Needing to earn a salary, I put art aside, returned to college, earned a BA in Elementary Education, a Master’s Degree, and 48 additional credits.
I taught for thirty years at Washington School in West Orange, NJ. Teaching was a fulfilling career, but nearing retirement age, I had the desire to paint again. In 2002, I unpacked my art supplies. I’ve been painting since.
My works reference both natural and man-made objects that show signs of aging and deterioration. Cracked sidewalks, weathered buildings, patterns etched in rocks, marks on the Southwest’s canyon walls fascinate me.
I try to create those looks by adding texture and pattern. Working with oil paint mixed with cold wax,( a medium made from beeswax,) and sand, I create grainy, raised surfaces in neutral colors. After building up several layers of paint, ideas begin forming regarding composition. Usually, but not always, my paintings have some structure as I’m partial to geometric shapes.
Creating abstracts is quite personal. I put my thoughts, emotions and energy into my works. When the viewer senses what I felt when painting, I’ve achieved something magical.
