Modern Spirit

I first primed the canvas of “Modern Spirit” with a  player like compound using palette knives to create ridges and patterns on the canvas.  I After viewing photos of a trip to Arizona, I envisioned the uneven terrain of a Southwest mesa,  and incorporated the browns and oranges I had seen there as I painted.  As I worked, using both palette knives and brushes,  the underlying texture lent itself to smaller colored accents.  The use of turquoise gives the painting more of the Southwest feel, and seems to provide a rhythm to the piece.
